PORTFOLIOS:

DRAWINGS | COLLABORATIONS | COMMISSIONED WORK

With a technique some have called “drawing with an eyelash,” Mel has created a visual narrative that communicates interconnectedness and balance.  Her work is made with very basic materials including tiny micron pens, paper, and ink washes that she mixes herself for a unique color palette.  She applies these materials on heavy watercolor paper that is often stained in coffee and dried in the sun.  In recent work, there has been a tremendous amount of layering and collage that has added depth to the process and ultimately the concept behind the pieces.

Mel started in LA with a DIY approach by showing work at Millie’s Café in Silver Lake, and other small venues, while building up a local audience within the neighborhoods she lived.  Now her work is exhibited all over the U.S. and abroad. Mel currently lives in Los Angeles with her partner, artist Travis Millard and works closely with The Merry Karnowsky Gallery, also in LA.
